I'll be honest. I was never really into skateboarding or even skateboarding films. But movies like Minding the Gap and MId-90's opened me up to the idea of skateboarding as sometimes more than a sport, but giving young people a very needed sense of community. Following in that vein is 7 Hills. A beautifully shot and very affecting documentary. This doc furthers that idea of skateboarding as a beautiful refuge, showing young skateboarding refugees from all over the Middle-East joining in the solace and community of the sport. I loved this film! You don't really have to be into skateboarding to get a lot out of it.

Plot summary
Children's laughter and the sound of skateboards rolling have replaced explosions and screaming. The war torn Middle East acts as a backdrop to this amazing story of human survival. They are not 'refugees' they are humans. The 7 Hills skate park in Amman, Jordan offers an incredible oasis in a land riddled with war and tragedy. The city of Amman houses some of the largest numbers of refugees throughout the world. Refugees from Gaza, Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Sudan come to the skate park every week to be taught how to skate by volunteers from all over the world as well. It is a joy to see the kids come alive while learning together and being in a community. The term "refugee" removes humanity from the individual. The Amman, Jordan-based 7 Hills skatepark manager, Mohammed Zakaria, shows how people can find hope and expression through skateboarding and community.

A beautiful and affecting world
A Skateboard Park Oasis
7 Hills is an eye opening documentary about the 7 Hills skate park in Amman, Jordan. This skate park offers an outlet and community to refugees from all over the war torn Middle East -- people from Gaza, Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Sudan. These types of stories are always remarkable in how people are able to persevere through incredibly difficult conditions that many of us have never faced, and it is inspiring to see how people find outlets in things you might not suspect, like skateboarding. This documentary reveals a common humanity and connection through skateboarding. Having Tony Hawk in the film is also a fun bonus too!
One terrific film
A wonderful documentary in every sense of the word. It is so well made! Such terrific quality! It really opened my eyes with respect to the Middle East conflicts while displaying openly what so many of the people desire. That being, peace and treated with the respect they deserve. This wonderful documentary was so informative. It really opened my eyes. So for me, this is a very easy thumbs up!! Bravo folks, well done!
