Two worlds bump into each other with resulting in a funny and understated comedy. A bit predictable perhaps but chances are you won't mind. You might just find yourself rooting for the characters here. As so many films nowadays contain anti-heroes and heroes that might as well be villains this film is like fresh air, despite the seediness of the setting. Book, cover, judgement: reserve.

Plot summary
Thirty-seven year old Winnipeg-based accountant Jordan Abrams, a proverbial doormat of a man, has pined after Rachel Stern since he was twelve. He finally got her to be his girlfriend last year after she being a peripheral or not so peripheral part of his life all these years. Now, in a relationship for a year, Jordan plans on asking her to marry him on a week-long romantic vacation they are taking to Niagara Falls. Rachel not only decides not to go on the trip, but dumps him when he, learning that she isn't going, asks her to marry him the day before the trip instead. The primary reason she dumps him?: he's lousy in bed, she not being able to envision bad, boring sex with him for the rest of her life. Rachel convinces him to take the vacation by himself, instead hanging out in Toronto with his college friend Dandak, his return from the vacation when they will talk about the break-up in more detail. Dandak, a sex machine, sees his role in his mending his friend's broken heart as getting him back in the dating scene. Jordan, however, can only think about getting Rachel back, he believing the best way to be a better lover by getting sex pointers from Dandak and to make Rachel jealous by texting her a photograph of him together with a sexy woman. The woman who obliges his sexy photograph request is Julia Bowe, a stripper he befriends. Due to Dandak's changing circumstance, Jordan turns to sexually-liberated Jules also to be his non-sex sex teacher, he in return helping her manage her dismal finances, she who has no concept of money or its management beyond buying whatever she wants. In Jordan and Jules' not always smooth student-teacher and teacher-student relationships, in what ends up being Jordan and Rachel's truncated week apart, and in Dandak dealing with his new situation, each in the collective may eventually come to the realization of what and who he or she wants in life, the further issue being if they can admit these realizations to themselves and the people that matter.

Surprisingly Charming and Funny
.. you won't forget these moments
The only awkward part of this film is the title... all the rest is pure rom-com surprise gold. The story is nothing that unique, but still very well written and executed. What is tops is the cast, starting with the leads (and all the rest of the way through) Jonas Chernick and Emily Hampshire.. bit.ly/15IZN6Q .. not big stars by any remote movie-land standards, but here they more than hold their own. They are near flawless, and by the end you cannot see anyone else being as exceptional in their roles. She is adorable in this movie, and quite an actor. Go on twitter, look at a couple of her video interviews posted. Compare the real-life person to the one on screen in this film.. it's one impressive performance! Should you enjoy the genre, this is by far one of the better romantic comedies of the year. Be sure and watch the ending credits with 'captions on' to get all the dialogue. And good films have good music.. this closing track wraps up a very engaging film experience... bit.ly/U3EkRB
A total surprise, a fun, raunchy adult comedy that Canadians can be proud of
If you read my reviews you will know I am not a huge fan of comedies. I am VERY particular about my comedies. I am also NOT a fan of the rash of raunchy, disgusting comedies that permeate our theatres now. I can't stand the ever so popular comedians like Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Vince Vaughan and so on. Yelling sexual slang, body parts, fart gags and so forth are not funny...ever. However, I am also not prudish and I can handle very adult humour and content if done correctly. So I wasn't sure what to expect from My Awkward Sexual Adventure which is described as the "funniest Canadian comedy in history." Well to say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. I expected a solid 2/10 at most and that was only if I could force my way through it. What I experienced was a very adult, raunchy (but not disgusting),funny, cute, quirky love story that tries very hard. Maybe it tries just a little too hard but it is a Canadian film trying to be a mainstream blockbuster. It is the American Pie of Canadian movies and definitely for adults. The characters are not teenagers or twenty somethings being all awkward but instead middle aged adults being awkward and coming of age in their own way. Its quirky and indie and really well done.
Jonas Chernick does double duty as writer and also star of the film. He is perfect as the awkward, geeky but very real Jordan. He is the perfect person for this role. He clearly knows his own character very well and he is not afraid to put himself out there in the most disturbing, naked, self-deprecating ways. Sarah Manninen is ridiculously good at being awful. She is perfect at being annoying, and generally you'll love to hate her. Emily Hampshire is the wild and vivacious Julia. She is Chernick's sex guru that inevitably sparks will fly between them. At first I thought their chemistry wouldn't really work because I figured their relationship would be the focus. But their awkward banter and friendship wins you over! Hampshire has terrific comedic timing and plays her role very well. I am a huge fan of Vik Sahay. I fell in love with his comedic brilliance in the TV Series "Chuck." Another reviewer on IMDb mentioned that he steals every scene he is in and that is so true. He isn't a major player in the film which is almost good because I think his large personality and character would almost overshadow that of Jordan (played by Chernick.) Sahay and Chernick have amazing best friend/comedy chemistry and I could watch a whole film with them.
Great cast, good writing, fun story...this is good solid entertainment. Best film of the year? No, not even close. The film does drag just a little bit around the middle mark and it is nearly painfully formulaic. You know exactly what is going to happen at each step of the way. However, formulaic doesn't make for a bad movie. Sometimes we love a genre or actor because we know exactly what to expect. My Awkward Sexual Adventure brought exactly what I wanted to the table. Now I suppose I am slightly biased because I love Toronto, it is my city of choice so seeing some of the local scenery and some geographical humour made it even more fun. Adults looking for something quirky and indie but with mainstream laughs will enjoy this sweet, awkward romantic comedy about sex. Definitely 100% for adults though!! 8/10
