Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies delivers on exactly what its name suggests - an excellent addition to the purely-for-entertainment genre of zombie-comedy that spawned out of the horror hybrid style that embodied the Evil Dead franchise and film spoofs like Shaun of the Dead. Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies follows its predecessors in bringing grotesque violence scenes and subtle thrills together that are pocketed with slap stick humor to make for a bloody good time.
To be fair, this film was never attempting to be engaging in a serious manner and allows the laughs to soak in all along the way. The story follows a group of young snowboarders in the midst of a video shoot on the Austrian Alps. However, when Steve pulls a reckless prank, fellow snowboarders Josh and girlfriend, Branka, are inevitably stranded with no way down. As Steve tries to amend his relationship with Branka at the mountain's sole ski inn, the owners attempt to profiteer his slopes has unknowingly infected his lodgers leading to the longest and bloodiest night of the year for the sole survivors.
Thanks to a diverse cast, the talented young actors save Lederhosen Zombies from what might become a dull and monotonous plot. RedBull rider Marc Swoboda also lends his skills to spice things up and utilizing talent that worked on The Force Awakens and Mockingjay Part 2 creates a spirited indie effort that stands above your generic zombie flick.

Plot summary
Steve, a young professional snowboarder, ruins a high-paying photoshoot with a silly prank, causing him, his girlfriend Branka and fellow snowboarder Josh to be left behind on the mountain. They seek shelter in a garish, loud aprés-ski tavern that is hosting an all-night party for the last night of the season. Things go from bad to worse when a scientific experiment conducted by a local entrepreneur unleashes an epidemic of zombies and mutant wildlife, but this is mostly lost on the local drunkards as they themselves are not always so easy to distinguish from zombies. Steve, Branka and Josh have to find a way to survive this hellish night. Finally, their epic battle for survival leads to them having to use their snowboarding skills to defeat the raging aprés-ski zombies once and for all.

Zombies, Laughs, and Gory Fun
Seen it before
It seems that every part of the world wants to make their own zombie comedy these days, ever since SHAUN OF THE DEAD proved such a success back in 2004. ATTACK OF THE LEDERHOSEN ZOMBIES is the Austrian version of the story, as a small group of snowboarders at a ski resort find themselves right in the middle of a zombie epidemic. Dumb characters and dumb humour are the order of the day here, and it's all very much by-the-by, with obvious nods to Jackson's BRAINDEAD thrown in along the way. You'd be better off checking out any of the prior films in the genre rather than this disappointment.
Zombies in the snow
"Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies" is an Austrian 75-minute movie from this year, so a very new release. The title (English language with Bavarian reference) is already a nice summary of the countries working on this film. The writer and director is young Austrian filmmaker Dominik Hartl and it is his second full feature film. The cast, however, come from all kinds of regions, which is why major parts of the film are in English language and this includes basically all the conversations between the two protagonists. In terms of the plot and action, the movie jumps the zombie film bandwagon with the little addition that it takes place in the Alps, so you will see snowy landscapes and "Berghütten" from start to finish in here. Actually, you see even more of these than you see of the zombies. I think this film is a solid watch for people who love the genre. For me, there was no real horror or dramatic influence in this film that worked well, even if they sometimes tried to deliver in that area. But the comedy isn't that bad. The character of Chekov is fun and a scene stealer. Actress Margarete Tiesel works nicely too and you can see that she is very experienced, was a lead actress in one of Ulrich Seidl's "Paradise" films for example. She definitely shines in a film that generally could have done with better actors. But I will forgive them for that because at least lead actress Gabriela Marcinková is a joy to look at and stunningly beautiful. To be with her, I'd even agree to live in a (mountain) world overrun by zombies, especially as these zombies frequently did not seem that bloodthirsty and relentless as the ones in "The Walking dead" for example. So yeah, occasionally a fun scene and the female protagonist's amazing looks keep this film from being a failure that it would have been otherwise because of the weak plot and forgettable acting. And as new as the snowy mountain landscapes may be to the genre of zombie films, there is nothing that really makes this work stand out from the hundreds of other zombie movies. I give it a thumbs-down and I am actually glad it was that short, easily under 90 minutes, under 80 even. Not recommended.
