Such lazy and derivative writing

I have only seen elements of this 1000 times before. This film was only saved from a two star review based on the winning performances of some of the famous marquee actors. Andy Garcia actually saved this film. That's saying a lot

it's fine

Best friends Diane (Diane Keaton),Vivian (Jane Fonda),Sharon (Candice Bergen),and Carol (Mary Steenburgen) have been meeting for their book club every month for forty years. Their next book is Fifty Shades of Grey and it unleashes the sexual beasts within. Successful single hotelier Vivian reconnects with old flame Arthur (Don Johnson). Federal judge Sharon is pushed into internet dating after 15 years of sexless divorce. Carol is happily married to Bruce (Craig T. Nelson) but their sex life has stalled. Widower Diane is being pushed by her overprotective mommy daughters (Alicia Silverstone, Katie Aselton) to sell her home and move in with them in Arizona. She reluctantly accepts but starts secretly dating airline pilot Mitchell (Andy Garcia).

This is fine. It's fine. It's perfectly fine. It's nothing to write home about but it's perfectly fine. It's great to see these veteran actresses doing solid work. They've drag along several of the old veteran actors with them. Diane has the most compelling plot. Her daughters add a real external hurdle unlike the others although it gets overblown when they catch her in the swimming pool. It needs to be something more. Maybe they bail her out of jail for something silly or catch her naked in public. It needs to be more or else they are way over reacting to a ridiculous degree. Carol is the next compelling character. Her problem with Bruce is realistic. They have real tension and they have one fun scene with a lady cop. Sharon's story is less compelling until we meet her ex. Finally, Vivian has the least interesting relationship. The self doubt is empty and the relationship has no real road blocks other than the self-imposed ones. The women are perfectly fine and their friendship seems genuine. That's all.

Old Troupers Know How To Entertain

This is a silly but harmless movie about four women (Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candace Bergen and Mary Steenbergen) who have been friends for life -- although how that works with Miss Fonda 17 years older than Miss Steenbergen is not explained -- who get together once a month for a book club. This month it's FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and all four women decide to do something about their sex lives. The men on offer are Andy Garcia, Craig T. Nelson, Don Johnson, and Richard Dreyfuss, with Ed Begley Jr. and Wallace Shawn thrown in there to demonstrate there are men one should not have anything to do with.

It's written to let each woman do her own shtick, Will they resist finding love and happiness? Of course. Will they find it? I had no doubt once the premise of the movie was revealed. Even with the trite writing, it was fun to watch these four actresses go through their stuff.
