Fun Plot and Creative Action

This is a very fun movie that represents another successful collaboration between Lau family member Lau Kar Wing and Sammo Hung. Excellent choreography and a funny plotline makes for a great kung fu comedy.

Good stuff...

DIRTY TIGER, CRAZY FROG is another example of an early Sammo Hung movie that pulls out all the stops in order to deliver a hilarious and action-packed adventure. It's not quite top-tier alongside the likes of KNOCKABOUT and MAGNIFICENT BUTCHER, but it's still thoroughly entertaining with its mix of strenuous fights and outlandish jokes. The plot is one of those ones where everybody's out to swindle one another for possession of the movie's MacGuffin, a suit of invincible armour. Lau Kar-Wing is endearing as the trickster hero while Sammo is as agile and delightful as ever. The astonishing supporting cast seems to feature everyone from Jason Pai Piao and Dean Shek to Fung Hark-on and Lee Hoi San and rest assured they all get their chance to shine. Eagle eyes will see many future greats such as Lam Ching-Ying, Yuen Biao and Mars in more minor roles. Good stuff!

One of the best martial arts movies of 1978

It starts with three challengers for "Dirty Tiger" played by one of the great action directors in movie history, Lau Kar-Wing. The weapons fight is simply spectacular.

Next, an old lady seeks his help to bring back her husband, "Crazy Frog", played by Sammo Hung. He is a gambler and womanizer. He is at the casino where "Multi Hand Chick" picks his pocket. She gets him to fight for her by pretending to be his wife. Sammo wears quite an undershirt - invincible armor. She steals it. The Dirty Tiger and Crazy Frog team up to get the armor back.

The cast consists of all the top stunt men of the era, except for Jackie Chan and the Grandmaster. The fight sequences often include props. That added an extra level of creativity and fun to watch. The final fight with the three section staffs could be the best fight sequence ever using those weapons.

I rate this above average and one of the best martial arts movies of 1978.

My copy is a digital file that plays on a HDTV as wide screen with English subtitles. The resolution is as good as standard DVD.
