not quite as good as Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Peter Highman (Robert Downey, Jr.) is flying home from Atlanta to his pregnant wife Sarah (Michelle Monaghan) in L.A. He runs into Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis) who constantly messes up his travel plans. They are both kicked off the plane when Ethan keeps saying "terrorist" and "bomb". They are now on the No Fly List. Peter's luggage and wallet remains on the plane to L.A. He reluctantly takes a ride from Ethan.

This is obviously inspired by 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles'. Galifianakis is John Candy's character with more incompetence and more inappropriateness. Downey is Steve Martin's character with more anger. Director Todd Phillips is throwing everything into this. Sometimes it's insanely hilarious. They are not the same charming Candy Martin duo but they still make a fine odd couple. It is at its hiliarious best when Ethan angers Peter and the laughs are big.

More Silly and Stupid than Funny

In Atlanta, the uptight architect Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) is ready to go to the airport to fly in the first-class to meet his wife that has a Caesarean section scheduled in Los Angeles for the birth of their first son in five days. However, he stumbles with the clumsy pothead and aspirant actor Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis) that provokes an incident in the cabin and they are expelled from the plane and Peter is included in the "no-fly" list. Further, without his wallet with documents, credit card and money and luggage that remained in the plane and are delivered in LA. Peter is forced to accept the lift of Ethan that has attended the funeral service of his father and intend to drop his ashes in the Grand Canyon. Peter has a painful journey with many incidents and accidents and changes his behavior.

"Due Date" is a disappointing and uneven comedy that is more silly and stupid than funny. The plot uses a similar storyline of "Dinner for the Schmucks" with a straight man that meets a schmuck and is forced to stay with him to achieve a goal. I had great expectation that "Due Date" would be a great film, but the situations that are supposed to be funny never work and I laughed only in a couple of scenes. My vote is five.

PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES/ GOOD TO THE LAST DROP

Two incompatible men are forced to cross country with each other, sometimes on limited funds.

Robert Downey jr. plays an architect who is a bit of a snob. Zach Galifanakis, is the common man with dreams of being a movie star. He is a fan of "2 1/2 Men" and like a child, or my last gf, sometimes doesn't realize or care about the consequence of his actions.

The movie is laugh out loud funny. I didn't think that it measured up to the original PT&A, simply because Downey's character was far less colorful than Steve Martin. The movie was written to showcase Zach Galifanakis. I thought it was better than "The Hangover" in that it excludes the abundance of sophomoric humor.

No nudity or sex. Contains language, masturbation, and pot smoking. Okay it has some sophomoric humor.
