A young woman pushing a carriage (supposedly her younger sibling) is done when a truck goes by, barely missing the carriage. The truck slams into a chicken coop, and the young woman runs over to see if the man is all right. Apparently they know each other so it's okay, but not with the audience. Or at least not with this viewer. Carol White certainly is concerned over farmer John Mills, and for some reason he agreed to become his housekeeper. He becomes obsessed with her, but she makes up the presence of a boyfriend that doesn't really exist. Finally along comes a young man that she does like (Stuart Wilson),and Mills doesn't like it. His obsession becomes far too much, and she's far too forward and flirting with him, basically leading him on, and eventually, it becomes tiresome to watch her flirt and to watch him practically drool.
Yes Sir John Mills is indeed one of the greatest British actors of all times, and he has given many great performances. This comes as a follow-up to his Academy Award-Winning performance in David Lean's later epic "Ryan's Daughter", and the audience knows that every time someone wins a supporting acting award that they are likely to get leading roles offered to them. Frankly after a while I was not enjoying the story anymore, and even the greenery of the location footage felt dirty. Mills' character doesn't hold any appeal anymore, and the desire to feel sorry for him disappears. White gets no sympathy either for leading him on. By the time the film begins to wrap up, it's just become repulsive trash.

Plot summary
Mr. Parker (Sir John Mills),a farmer who has the reputation of drinking most of his money away, lives on a farm which is in a poor state of repair. A pretty young girl, Dulcima Gaskain (Carol White),takes pity on him and decides to help him by cleaning the place. She is happy to be earning money, and he is happy because she is there. Despite being a miserable old bastard, Mr. Parker finds himself falling for Dulcima, and asks her to move in with him, to save her the walk from her house to his farm every day. She does, and is happy with her work. She, however, falls for a gamekeeper (Stuart Wilson) from the nearby estate, and they start to meet in secret because of Mr. Parker's increasing jealousy. One day, while he is at the market, she discovers a whole load of money hidden in an upstairs room, and this changes the relationship between Mr. Parker and Dulcima. She becomes more friendly towards the farmer, now knowing of his wealth, and Mr. Parker decides that he wants her for his bride. Dulcima, however, still sees the gamekeeper, and eventually, Mr. Parker finds out.

Watchable.
Dulcima is daytime television soap stuff, but engages enough.
The story's fine, the two leads fine, with mild humour, nothing too memorable.

Top-billed Carol White makes a very unlikely match with John Mills, then re-inventing himself as a character actor following 'The Family Way' and 'Ryan's Daughter'.
It's very prettily photographed in Gloucestershire by Tony Imi but so parodic (Mills's rival in love is even a gamekeeper) that some reviewers have even mistaken it for a comedy; although it certainly doesn't end like one!
