The first time I saw this movie was on the sci-fi channel and the movie had pieces cut from it and it was badly dubbed. I bought the DVD and watched it and it was a lot better than the sci-fi experience. First off the music is great when you listen to it in stereo, secondly the effects are really good for a Godzilla movie. My major complaint it seems was simply Godzilla's appearance in the movie. It is a major jolt when one is used to the Godzilla of the previous two movies, but on seeing it again it looks rather good, and very evil (still a bit two dumpy, but I got over this time). In this movie, Godzilla is on a rampage...a rampage where he isn't just stumbling through the city causing damage because of his size, but rather causing damage because he wants to kill the people of Japan and make them suffer. Many of his most deplorable acts were cut from the sci-fi version, but on DVD you get to see him cause lots of pain on purpose. Who can stop the rampaging Godzilla...well we have Mothra, Baragon, and King Gidorah, but quite frankly these monsters just can not stand up to the power of this evil super Godzilla. So the military also pitches in with their full arsenal. Very interesting characters abound in a reporter and her military dad and various other interesting people. All of them with one goal: To stop the onslaught of Godzilla.

Plot summary
Strange incidents occur when an American submarine has been destroyed by a mysterious force at sea off the shores of Guam. Only Admiral Tachibana was certain that behind the disaster was none other than the destructive King of the Monsters, Godzilla! 50 years after his attack on Tokyo in 1954, Godzilla has mysteriously returned to life to destroy Japan, and General Tachibana, whose parents died in the monster's destructive wake, was prepared for his return to protect Japan from yet another tragic disaster, but is dismissed by the overly confident Japanese government, who underestimate Godzilla's power. But to further prove Tachibana's claim, his daughter Yuri, who works for the TV news program "Digital Q," investigates strange phenomena in three separate areas in Japan (two of which involve the deaths of immoral youths),and meets a mysterious old man named Isayama, who proclaims that aside from his infamous nuclear origins, Godzilla is an accumulation of vengeful souls (of both Japanese and non-Japanese) abandoned to die in the Pacific War, and thus, mere weapons cannot kill him. While Tachibana has now been vindicated by the government, Isayama awakens the Three Sacred Guardian Beasts of Yamato, which protected Japan in its ancient past, and were then put into hibernation in the aforementioned three areas of Japan. The three monsters, King Ghidorah (sky),Mothra (water) and Baragon (earth),fight the ravaging Godzilla, while Tachibana also prepares to go into battle against his old radioactive nemesis . . .

On second thought this one is very good.
Monsters...Are you ready to rumble?
GODZILLA, MOTHRA, KING GHIDORAH:GIANT MONSTERS ALL-OUT ATTACK makes a rumble in the jungle look like a cock-fight. This is a knock-down drag out to the hilt. It has been many years since Godzilla's last attack on Japan when an earthquake awakens the giant menace from his deep sea slumber. When a Japanese submarine spots the monster there is reluctance to report the sighting. A Navy Admiral(Ryudo Uzaki)is more than a little alarmed for as a child he witnessed Godzilla's rage. The Admiral's daughter(Chiharu Niyama)is filming a documentary for a struggling TV station and ends up getting up close footage of the battle of all battles.
Godzilla is no longer the monster of old that seemed sympathetic albeit making shambles of all in his way. Now it appears he is deliberately finding satisfaction in setting civilians ablaze with his fiery breath. Soon assembled is three legendary monsters, Mothra, pug terrier-looking Baragon and King Ghidora, the three headed beast to protect the Japanese homeland from more of Godzilla's destruction. This old-fashioned monster romp is fun viewing for the whole family.
It all comes together
I've recently been catching up with the millennium-era GODZILLA films and so far this is the best I've seen. It's not perfect but it has a lot more visceral impact and power to it this time around, and the decision to make Godzilla himself a truly evil foe is something that appeals to me; I like the idea of him being guided by the souls of the Japanese war dead wanting revenge on the country, pretty controversial it has to be said. The special effects ramp up a gear here with great use of quality back projection and the like to make the city destruction more realistic than ever. The human plot isn't great but fairly watchable, and the presence of no less than three extra monsters - Baragon, Mothra and King Ghidorah - helps a lot for the entertainment value too. Plus you get to see Ghidorah as a good guy for the only time in his career, which surely counts for something.
