Besides what the cynics will see Ice Princess is an undeniable bubblegum treat and despite it's sometimes lapse in logic makes an agreeable sports film both emotional and intense. Trachtenberg of Buffy fame stars as the title star a physics geek in school whom when offered the opportunity to go to college with a scholarship, decides to base her summer project on figure skating and the physics proportions of what would accustom special movements and such. In that she finds a passion she's long denied herself because of her over bearing, feminist, college professor MOM played wonderfully by Joan Cusack whom of course thinks it's just a waste of time. The film is of course a clash of overly obvious clichés but anyone seeing this film should know that already. But these are the clichés that make movies like this truly inspiring and enjoyable. The film is fun, memorable and heart tugging. But the standout addition here is a wonderful performance by the still gorgeous Kim Catrall she's still in mean mode but god can she deliver those lines and still come off likable ultimately. So throwout what cynics will say about this sleeper treat and go experience this gold medal for your selves. 9/10

Plot summary
A high-school bookworm transforms into a swan. Brainy Casey Carlyle has never quite fit in. Caught between her fantasy of becoming a championship figure skater and her strong-willed mother, who has her on the fast track to Harvard, she can only hope to be like Nikki, Tiffany and Gen--three elite skating prodigies who are ruthlessly competing on the US National circuit (and have attitudes to match). But when Casey gets the chance to train with Gen and her coach, a disgraced former skating champion who also happens to be Gen's mother, she must dash her own mother's hopes in order to pursue her dream. Now, with only the support of Gen's teenage brother, a hunky Zamboni driver, Casey takes on the challenge of her life when she finds herself competing against the best to make it into the championship circuit and become a real "ice princess."

A Gold Medal!
A really sweet movie!
I never thought I would love a film about ice-skating, and Ice Princess does the sport justice. It is beautifully shot, beautifully acted, but with one flaw, it gets a tad sentimental.
A perfectly cast Michelle Trachtenburg is the girl with a dream of becoming an ice-skater, but her strong-willed mother(a moving performance from Joan Cusack) has other ideas. Other notable actors are Kim Catrell and Haydn Pannettiere, who develop a pleasing shine to the film.
The script is sharp, that does occasionally get too sentimental, but the tight direction and the spirited performances from all involved, make this a sweet and enjoyable movie, that is an 8.5/10 from me. Bethany Cox
More than the usual stereotypes
Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg) is a gifted science nerd. Her teacher asks her to do a science project to get a scholarship. Her serious mother Joan (Joan Cusack) is set for her to go to Harvard. Meanwhile popular girl Gen Harwood (Hayden Panettiere) is training to be a world class figure skater under her demanding mother/coach Tina (Kim Cattrall). When Casey starts to learn figure skating, she turns out to be a natural.
It's a little bit unbelievable that the girl becomes a great skater so quickly. At least Trachtenberg can highlight her skating and comedic abilities in this movie. However if you dig a little deeper into this standard Disney fare, there is a good movie about mother-daughter relationships. That's the heart of the movie, and what separates from the other cheesy teen movies. The adult characters are allowed to be real. The two girls are more than two-dimensional high school stereotypes.
