interesting performance but not much else

It's 1966. Jimi Hendrix (André Benjamin) plays in anonymity before his debut "Are You Experienced" in 1967. Kathy Etchingham (Hayley Atwell) is in love and pushes to get interest. Soon, various people support him and he goes to London.

I don't think André Benjamin acted as much as he tries to take on the persona of Jimi Hendrix. There have been some backlash with the accuracy of the portrayal. I don't mind some dramatization if it actually leads to some drama except the plot (such as it is) meanders aimlessly. The drama comes with the introduction of Ida later in the second half but the violence seems to come out of nowhere. When the movie is "Based on a True Story", accuracy becomes secondary. Also the problems with the estate means his iconic music isn't in this movie. There is an interesting performance but not much else.

Stone free

Jimi: All is by My Side is a disjointed and rambling bio pic of the great Jimi Hendrix and rather fictionalised.

Andre Benjamin is too laid back and fails to give a spirited performance until the he sings a Beatles song. The film is hampered as the makers could not get the rights to Hendrix's music.

The film follows Hendrix in London has he impressed Linda Keith (Imogen Poots) over in the USA, who got him over to Britain and hooked him with a manager. While he is Britain, he impresses people with his guitar playing, takes drugs and womanises like no tomorrow. He gets a girlfriend Kathy Etchingham (Hayley Atwell) who he has a stormy relationship with.

The film meanders too much and never even hits third gear. It finishes rather abruptly, I wanted to see him give his iconic performance in Monterey but rights issue probably got in the way I guess.

It is no secret that Hendrix died by choking on vomit. Some decades after he died, the police re-investigated the cause of his death. It must have been someone else's vomit he must have choked on!

EVERY EXPERIENCE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A RECKLESS ONE

I guess this is part 1. The film starts out with Hendrix playing as "Jimmy James and the Blue Flames" to empty nightclubs in New York. Hendrix (André Benjamin) is shy, unsure, and inarticulate. Linda Keith (Imogen Poots),model and Keith Richard's girlfriend, is the only one who recognizes Hendrix's guitar magic. After she introduces Jimi to acid, she convinces him to "do his own thing" at which time he gets discovered and goes to London to mixed reviews.

Hendrix is shown as a stoner who beats up his girlfriend while talking about peace. The film ends before Monterey, leaving us never hearing the songs we associate with Hendrix. At times the film felt like it was more about Linda Keith than Hendrix. Some of the events in Hendrix's life are in dispute. This gives us one version and not the one on Wikipedia.

I was slightly disappointed.

F-bomb, sex. No nudity.
