This was a solid, entertaining Lego Star Wars special. In November of 2020, Disney+ released a Lego Star Wars Christmas special, and I loved it. I loved how it was funny, entertaining, and had a lot of callbacks. That is exactly what this had.

Any Lego special is funny, but this one was better than most. Just like in the Holiday special, the writers made fun of things Star Wars gets laughed at, but they do it in such a clever way. The characters just act so silly and stupid as well, it is so funny. Graballa the Hutt was also funny. Just a stupidly silly character. Seeing Zombie Separatist Droids was also hilarious. They were already jokes as is, but them as zombies made them look even dumber. It was definitely one of the highs of the special for me.

The story and plot of this wasn't too bad either. It was pretty entertaining which is all I am looking for when I watch stuff like this. I also thought Vaneé sharing the stories during the short, and them all culminating at the end was pretty cool. The stories were pretty entertaining as well. My favorite one was when Palpatine sent Grievous and Maul to retrieve a Sith lightsaber. It was the most comedic of the stories, and it was also the best. I liked how they showed Maul's rebirth from Clone Wars and made it funny. I liked the twist. It was also cool to hear Sam Witwer back to voice Maul. He was phenomenal in Clone Wars and Rebels, he brought the same energy to this as well, but had a slightly comedic role which was cool. Lastly, Poe said "I've got a bad feeling about this," the iconic Star Wars line that is in nearly everything. I laugh whenever I hear it I'm Star Wars now.

Lastly, they made a most of references in this special, not just to Star Wars, but to horror movies as well, and they once again added a comedic twist to it.

Just like the Lego Holiday special, this was very well done. I definitely recommend families watching it for a Halloween family movie, or for a family movie on any night. It is family friendly Lego Star Wars fun.

Last Christmas there was a Lego Star Wars special on Disney Plus, which I felt was "reasonable but not quite clever enough to live long in the memory". Fortunately, whilst still not a must-see event, this Halloween special is a lot more inventive and fun for it.

Whilst mopping up the remains of the First Order, Poe Dameron's (Jake Green) X-Wing is damaged and crash lands on Mustafar. There he discovers that Graballa The Hutt (Dana Snyder) is converting Darth Vader's (Matt Sloan) castle into a new Empire inspired hotel. Whilst Dameron is negotiating for assistance, Vanee (Tony Hale) a cloaked figure who came with the castle begins to recount several stories with the aim of encouraging progress deeper and deeper into the secret chambers and to the Sith treasures hidden inside.

Essentially the story is a Portmanteau film, with Vanee's stories making up the bulk of the run time. The stories are loose movie parodies. The middle one, is the least easy to pinpoint what film they're after, but something like the Dracula Meets Frankenstein Universal films is probably the clearest touchpoint. This sees a resurrected Darth Maul battle a restored General Grievous to recover a lightsabre for the Emperor. The third section is an adaptation of the classic Twilight Zone story, "The Monkey's Paw" with "The Wookies Paw" in which young Luke Skywalker wishes his way off Tatooine, but each wish takes him further and further into the dark side.

You may have noticed I've missed off the first one, that's because it's by far the best. A full parody of "The Lost Boys" detailing Kylo Ren's decision to join up with the Knights of Ren. I'm not sure how many people planning to watch this film will also be intimately familiar with an Vampire film from 34 years ago - but I was in that bracket and enjoyed that section quite a lot. There was a myriad of other little moments cribbed from classic horror in there too.

Overall, a lot funnier and more inventive than the Christmas special, if perhaps still a way short of the cinematic Lego films.

Poe lands on a red planet where they are building the Darth Vader resort hotel. Poe is lead into the building and secret chambers to recover rare Silth items. An anthology of stories ensue that are mash-ups of the Star Wars plots and back stories.

They did clever things like use pieces of other film scenes in their tales. I was able to catch LOTR, Shining, Nightmare on Elm Street and the Twilight Zone. I am sure there were more. In spite of being clever, it was not overly entertaining. The characters were stiff. (pun intended.) Graballa the Hutt I liked.
