It was very fresh kind of film at that time. Dialogues were very real, how we usually talk everyday. I really loved both the stories. Even though Harleen character barely speak anything but it looks kind of apt as girls were "supposed" to be shy in those times - still liked her performance, and I hoped to see her in more films. But. :(
Deepika & Saif - an odd pair but after watching the film I really liked them.
Both timelines have many relatable elements - my environment is mix of both tradition and modernity.
And the songs are absolutely brilliant. I can still recall all the lyrics of all the songs.
It was a perfect movie. And obviously the LAJ (2020) was not at all needed or at least they could have spared the album.

Good music, good story.
Imtiaz Ali's direction is fantastic....
After watching Love Aaj Kal one thing is said n done, Imtiaz Ali is a fantastic storyteller. The person who wrote and directed the lovable Jab We Met, is back this time with Love Aaj Kal.
Direction wise, flawless. Script wise, flawed. Ali's writing is a letdown, the first half of the film isn't as catchy as one would've expected. Plus the execution of the couple being in a relationship in the first 10 minutes is odd. Not everyone will get the hang of it. The first half picks up, but it doesn't hold. The second hr is a high-point of the enterprise, with the drama growing scene by scene.
One expected more from Imtiaz Ali as a writer. He could've come with a much, much better first hr, plus LAK is not going to attract the masses. The film is strictly meant to for the Multiplex audience, who understand and like this kinda films. Love Aaj Kal is only for the elite, not for the hoi polloi.
Coming to the pluses: Undoubtedly, Imtiaz Ali's flawless direction. Production Value is great. Saif is a good producer. Music by Pritam is truly super, the songs elevate the film to a much higher level. Performances are excellent: Saif is lovable. He carries both the roles with remarkable ease. Easily, his careers best work. Deepika looks great and delivers a first-class performance. Rishi Kapoor is in form, once again. Rahul Khanna is likable in a guest appearance. The actress who plays the role of Harleen is very pretty. Neetu Singh's surprise appearance, is a pleasure to watch.
Now the minuses: Clearly the writing. The first hr doesn't hold, plus the length of the film can easily be trimmed by 20 minutes. The film gets dragging towards the climax.
All said n done, 'Love Aaj Kal' is worth a watch. The pluses given up, don't disappoint.
Good film
After the success of Jab We Met, Imtiaz Ali came back with Love Aaj Kal The film also marked Saif's foray into production. The best part of the film is that it has a unique plot which may seem paperthin initially but slowly we realise it's lot more. The film tries to draw parallels between present love story and past and succeeds to some extent. The relationship between Saif and Deepika is well handled, at the start itself we are shown that they are parting away and what follows is a break up party something seldom shown in Indian films. Slowly we are introduced to Rishi Kapoor's past life where again Saif plays his younger version and the film keeps going back and forth and yet makes an appeal. There are some flaws too like Deepika suddenly divorcing Rahul Khanna after 1 day of marriage looks a bit hard to digest, Also the last few reels seem like a melodrama which is in stark contrast to the otherwise tone of the film though the end again is well handled.
Direction by Imtiaz Ali is superb Music by Pritam was a big hit, Twist, Chor Bazari were popular, Aaj Din Chaddeya by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was superb, while the rest songs too are good especially Mohit Chauhan's Dooriyan
Amongst actors Saif Ali Khan does a good job as Jai though he looked too old for it, as Veer he does a great job Deepika Padukone does her role well, though it doesn't demand much from her Rishi Kapoor is outstanding as usual, while Gisseli Monteiro as Harleen is a good new find. Rahul Khanna has an ill defined role but he does well Raj Jhutsi is good while Neetu Singh shows a nice cameo
