Gordon

Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) disciple Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) escapes and vows revenge on Jill (Betsy Russell). She goes to the police seeking immunity and protection. Various Jigsaw victims have formed a support group. Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) from the first movie is dismissive of them. Publicity-seeking survivor Bobby (Sean Patrick Flanery) goes on TV to sell his book.

This opens with a very public Jigsaw test. It turns out to be a silly love triangle and it's too silly for a Saw scenario. Putting it in public is a risk for the franchise. I hoped for the best but it's more for the worst. I don't know why they want to the stage it in such an obvious Toronto location. All of it screams bad 90's movies. Then there is Bobby. He needs a better actor but more importantly, he is overshadowed by Dr. Gordon. They cannot reveal Gordon at the beginning and then sideline him for most of the movie. He is the big fish. Cary Elwes' stardom may have faded but that character in the first movie has not, especially for fans. They cannot wave him in front of us and tell us a story about some new guy. I do like the battle between Jill and Hoffman but they need to do more with that. Most of this movie is about Bobby and I don't care while the important Saw characters are fighting it out in the background and off-screen. As for the standard surprise closing reveal, I don't like it for various reasons. No spoilers here.

Grisly finish to the franchise

The final SAW movie is as unpleasant as all the others, with the added gimmick of being in 3D (although I ended up watching the 2D version on DVD). Despite much publicity about it being the last in the series, it doesn't really feel much like one as it leaves the door open for further sequels down the line.

Plot-wise, it's business as usual, with a new round of participants playing one of Jigsaw's deadly games plus all the bits with detectives hunting down the killers. You definitely need to have seen the previous entries in the series to make sense of it all, at least the scenes involving the criminal investigations.

Much of the time, the plotting feels quite obvious, like you're watching the scriptwriter playing a game of chess with the characters as pieces, gradually moving them into the relevant position before the play-off. In case it all gets a bit much, though, there's a string of inevitable and excruciating self-torture scenes which seem even more graphic and depraved than before.

Characters are hooked, drilled, spliced, exploded and more besides, all captured via exemplary effects work in ultra-gory detail. Such scenes are designed to make the viewer flinch, and boy do they work; there isn't a great deal of imagination to them (aside from the intriguing multi-participant 'garage' trap) but they certainly keep the film moving for those who have the stomach for it. I think the scene involving a fish hook is by far the most gruelling.

So farewell to the SAW franchise; I can't exactly say I enjoyed sitting through these productions, but they passed the time well enough – I suppose!

Game Over! Amen, Rest in Piece

Detective Matt Gibson (Chad Donella) chases the psychotic Detective Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) while Jigsaw's widow Jill Tuck (Betsy Russell) tries to kill him as assigned by her husband. However he escapes and Jill meets Gibson and offers to sign an affidavit listing the murders committed by Hoffman. In return, she requests protection.

Meanwhile, the prominent Jigsaw survivor and leader of a support group Bobby Dagen (Sean Patrick Flanery) is abducted with his wife and friends and forced to play a mortal game to save his beloved wife and he.

I hope that "Saw 3D" is really the last film of this violent franchise. This absurd and violent stupidity is unbelievable and I hope the producers, director e and crew rest in piece and do not make any other sequel. Game over, Amen. My vote is three.

Title (Brazil): "Jogos Mortais – O Final" ("Mortal Games – The End")
