Anguishing, Intriguing and Bizarre Trip to the Innermost Fear

On the day after his fortieth anniversary, the family man and computer analyst George Grieves (Thomas Cavanagh) goes to the Mt. Abaddon Hospital for a routine procedure of colonoscopy with Dr. Sharazi (Cas Anvar). Along his birthday party, his friends and family tell many cases of medical errors, and George is worried about. After the surgery, George finds that his surgery had complications because of a homonymous patient, and he had received a thoracoscopic sympathectomy instead. While interned, George discloses bizarre and dark secrets about the East Wing of the hospital while his wife and family have to take a decision about his fate.

"Sublime" is an anguishing, intriguing and bizarre trip to the innermost fear. This movie has excellent screenplay, direction, performances and magnificent cinematography, but paradoxically it is one of the most unpleasant and painful films that I have ever seen. My position seems to be contradictory, but it is not. "Sublime" as cinema is amazing and the Kafkian situation of George trapped in a journey to hell is scary and slightly recalls Adrian Lyne's "Jacob's Ladder". I bought this DVD, but I am not sure whether I will see this movie again. My vote is eight.

Quirky

A great quirky horror/ dark comedy that keeps you guessing, "Is it real or his imagination?"

The creators of this movie have nothing to be ashamed of. What I liked least was the DVD cover design. They didn't put much into that. If you like the Twilight Zone and Coen brothers and B horror movies, then get it.

A Drama More Than a Horror Film At Times

George Grieves is in the hospital for a colonoscopy. But, due to a similar name, he ends up getting a gland removed that causes him to sweat profusely. What starts as a simple mistake becomes more and more tragic as Grieves becomes the hospital's virtual prisoner and is visited by a man who seems to kill off his roommates.

Maybe I wasn't paying full attention, but this film seemed hard to follow. It jumps times fairly often, from before to after the operation, with a large chunk of scenes having more to do with family relationships than any sort of horror story. The horror aspects could have fit in twenty minutes, which I found disappointing. That, and he goes through phases where you cannot tell if he's being delusional or if the hospital is lying to him -- making the already jumbled plot more confusing. A second viewing would clear it up, but I have no desire to give it that chance.

Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs stands out in this film as Mandingo, an orderly who has a killing urge. He may or may not be real. Until he arrives and gives his speech about black power and such, the film just doesn't have much momentum. Then it goes full throttle, at least for a while. Too bad this isn't until abut an hour into the film. I really hate having to wait for the action to pick up -- at least sometimes (I found "Death Proof" respectable, but "The Descent" boring, for example).

This film was straight to video, and as one might expect with most of those titles, it's not above average. In fact, it's not even average. I can't recall more things to get into (I waited too long to write this review) but my general impression was that it was just not worth the viewing, and I probably won't go back to write a better review. Sorry. But just save yourself the trouble and get something else.
