There are a select few movies that I enjoy more each time I watch them. "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother" is one of them. I've seen the movie over 20 times, and I laugh out loud every single time.
Every main character in the movie gives a great performance. And, the comedic trio of Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn & Marty Feldman is at its best in this film. Dom DeLouise's performance as the opera singer is a gem as well.
This film marks Gene Wilder's first attempt at movie making without the help of Mel Brooks. Although this film stays close to Brooks' style, Wilder overall uses more subtle humor.
The bottom line is, if you are a fan of Gene Wilder's earlier movies like: Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak, The Producers, Willy Wonka..., Young Frankenstein, etc., then this movie should end up being one of your favorites.

Gene Wilder's finest hour and a half
I thought this film was purely outrageous. Gene Wilder (Sigerson),Madeleine Kahn (Jenny Hill),and Marty Feldman (Orville Stanley Slacker... er, I mean Sacker) each give the performance of a lifetime. Not to mention Leo McKern (whom I recognized from "Ladyhawke" thanks to this movie),whose perfectly psychotic turn as Moriarty made me feel like I was going to explode from laughing. Still not to mention Dom DeLuise as Eduardo Gambetti, probably the only character in the history of entertainment who can rank right up there in hilarity with Inspector Jacques Clouseau (that would be the good Jacques Clouseau, Peter Sellers). Come on, people-- this movie was great!
Tedious and unfunny.
Gene Wilder was a wonderful actor. Unfortunately, here with "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother" he bit off way more than he could chew, as he not only starred in the film but directed, wrote it and sang throughout the film. As an actor, he is wonderful...and he should have stuck with acting alone. The project is tedious, horribly unfunny and a waste of great talent.
The film stars Sherlock Holmes' younger brother, Sigerson (Wilder). As far as his being smarter, he's certainly not....and again and again he makes a mess of things when Sherlock passes a case off to him.
The film features many horribly unfunny things--most of which go on and on and on. Why does Wilder frequently break into song with Madeline Kahn? It's not funny and just seems weird. Why does Kahn constantly lie, it's not funny and just seems weird. And, why is Marty Feldman in the film when he's given nothing funny to do...and this seems REALLY weird. The bottom line is that this film was a misfire from the onset and I kept waiting, in vain, for it to start getting funny.
