This movie possesses that rarest of combinations: utter brilliance and unbridled stupidity. Obviously, nothing can compare to Monty Python's Flying Circus, but The Onion Movie's creators were plainly big fans of that show, and succeeded in delivering "something completely different".
While this movie is chock full of current-societal satire (which Python never was),it uses the clever segues to new scenes, the reappearance of characters you'd just about forgotten, and the absolute Absurdity (it has to be capitalized!) that those wonderful Brits mastered decades ago.
The Onion Movie is not a regular movie. If you insist on plot, and/or are easily offended, this movie is not for you. But if you're in the mood for laughing about cultural stereotypes, or people with enough humor to parody themselves (you rock Steven Seagal!),or just enjoying the ride through countless ridiculously silly situations (God bless you, Armed Gunman),you might want to take a peek at The Onion Movie.
Do you have the balls?

Plot summary
We watch the Onion News, America's Finest News Source, with Dana Dobbs, Senior Correspondent Kip Kendall, and award-winning anchor Norm Archer. In addition to watching the news, we see the program's commercials, some commentary on the film as it proceeds, and we watch some terrorists in training. Behind the scenes, Onion News's corporate owner, Global Tetrahedron, seeks synergy by promoting its other products within Norm's news broadcast. Norm doesn't like it, especially when a toy penguin (think Energizer Bunny) waddles across his desk promoting a Global Tetrahedron film starring Steven Seagal. But Norm may end up needing Steven's help.

Screamingly funny
Clever satirical comedy. Basically a stream of independent skits. Each skit is a clever parody of everyday life, particularly the media.
Screamingly funny.
I'm laughing as hard as hell, and I'll still take it!
To the list of media satires we can now add "The Onion Movie", based on the farcical newspaper. The plot, so to speak, looks at anchorperson Norm Archer's (Len Cariou) frustration at his superiors' desire to advertise the release of a Steven Seagal flick than focus on a brewing war. Of course, this is an excuse for a series of outlandish sketches: a singer's pornographic lyrics, a terrorist training video, and "AREA SOCKS FOUND".
I was laughing myself sick throughout much of the movie. It's just so hilarious how they throw everything at you out of the blue and just keep it coming. Naturally, you have to accept totally silly humor to like this. Since it apparently did poorly at test screenings, I conclude that the people at those screenings must have lacked senses of humor. This is pretty much the kind of stuff that one finds in "Airplane!" and such flicks.
All in all, I think that you'll like this. I sure did, and I recommend it. Also starring Rodney Dangerfield.
